Google, the online grocer, has launched a new service, Whole Foods Market, which aims to be the local grocery for Indian shoppers.
The company has partnered with Flipkart, which owns the popular grocery marketplace, to provide local food options.
The company will launch a pilot project in Bengaluru in early 2017, where customers can buy groceries from a variety of retailers including Flipkarts, Walmart and Alkahesta.
In the trial, shoppers will be able to buy from a wide variety of grocery stores, including Alkaesta, Walmart, and Amazon.
Whole Foods Market is a new way for online shopping to be done in India.
“In the next five years, the number of grocery retailing activities and the number that are going online are going to be in the hundreds of thousands,” said Rajeev Shukla, chief executive officer at Whole Foods.
Wholesale grocery stores are the largest segment in India’s grocery market.
Flipkarted and Walmart are among the biggest players in the market with a combined retail footprint of $12 billion.

In April, Amazon launched its own e-store in India, but has been slow to grow its sales, despite being the top seller in the country.
Last year, Walmart India launched a separate online grocery service, Walmart Indian.
